Since 1999, through the Waste Wise program, businessess in the Highlands Region have been able to access one on one assistance from the Regional Education Officer to develop a Waste Reduction Action Plan for their organisation.

The Action Plan allows a business to be strategic in their approach to waste minimization by gathering baseline data, and identifying actions that address the waste heirarchy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle before eventual disposal. By following this structured approach some businesses have been able to divert over 80% of their waste from landfill. As the cost of landfill increases the opportunity for cost savings are apparent.

The need to look beyond just waste minimization and recycling has lead to the introduction of ResourceSmart. This program is still being developed for the business sector and is expected to be launched late in 2009.

In 2007, the Highlands RWMG hosted a series of business sustainability breakfasts on the key themes of waste, water and energy.  The Highlands Sustainable Buisness Network was establsihed and now supports the delivery of a series of breakfasts, workshop forums and site tours throughout the year. This network is now coordinated by the Australian Industry Group.
