In May 2008, the Highlands RWMG commissioned at study into organics waste reduction and recovery in the Region.

Some of the finding are:

  • The implementation of a domestic kerbside garden waste service, for recovery of materials in a local composting facility has the potential to divert approximately 9 tonnes of organic material from landfill.
  • Opportunities exist to capture oranic waste from small to medium sized enterprises such as supermarkets and hospitality bisinessess.
  • Significant volumes of food waste generated by food manufacturers in the local Region are currently recovered through contract arrangements with stockfeed manufacturers. It is highly unlikely a local compost facility will engage these organisations.
